More about early San Diego
The Spanish built 21 missions in a chain that stretched from San Diego to north of the San Francisco Bay. The road connecting the missions was known as the El Camino Real. In earlier Spanish colonial times, any road under the direct jurisdiction of the Spanish crown and its viceroys was considered to be a camino real.
El Camino Real is a 600 mile trail from Mission San Diego de Acala in San Diego to Mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma. El Camino Real was created by the Spaniards to link some twinty one California missions along with their settlemints and presidios. The missions were located approximately 30 miles apart which was a long days ride on horseback
